Salasya rallies Luhyas to unite and reject Raila and ODM in 2027

Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has called on the Luhya community to unite ahead of the 2027 General Election and reject the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party at all levels.

Taking to his official social media channels on Sunday, April 27, 2025, Salasya urged the Luhya community to start by kicking ODM out of the region by denying the party seats ranging from Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to Governors in the next general elections.

The legislator further stressed that Luhya unity was non-negotiable, adding that the community had suffered under Raila Odinga’s leadership since the death of Kijana Wamalwa.

Salasya praised Kijana Wamalwa and Masinde Muliro for their efforts in uniting the Luhya people and said it was time to revive that spirit.

“What I know is that Luhya Unity is the way to go come 2027, after 20 years under Raila’s leadership, since Kijana Wamalwa passed, who for the first time united the Luhya community after Masinde Muliro,” he said.

“The first step is to kick Raila out of Luhya politics by denying him any seat to go to ODM, from MCA to MP to senator to governor, not because they are bad, but because they are in a bad political party with no people’s interest.

The lawmaker went on to say that he was still undecided about whether he would defend his seat, run for the presidency, or be a running mate.

“Even I do not know whom I will support for presidency or if I will be the one on the presidential ballot myself, or if I will be a running mate of somebody for presidency, or if I will be maintaining my seat of Mumias East,” he added.

Salasya on ODM divorce

On Saturday, April 5, 2025, Salasya outlined the frustrations felt by the Luhya community, which has historically been one of ODM’s most reliable supporters, while officially declaring political divorce between the community and the party.

Salasya noted that the community has voted for Raila Odinga in every election, filled his rallies, and provided critical support at the ballot box.

“We have stood with Raila Amolo Odinga through thick and thin. We have voted for him loyally in every election, even when others doubted,” Salasya said, expressing the community’s long-standing support for the ODM leader. “It is the Luo community that benefits most when it comes to national appointments and decisions,” he said.

According to Salasya, the Luhya people have long been used as a political machine, offering their votes during elections but receiving little in return during the critical moments of governance.

The MP went on to suggest that several regions in Western Kenya, including Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga, and even Nairobi’s Luhya constituencies, are already moving away from ODM’s orbit.

He signalled that the political shift in the region is already underway, adding that the Luhya community will no longer be complacent or passive in the upcoming elections.

“We are not waiting to be invited—we are charting our own course. We shall not go into 2027 blindly. We are awake. We are ready,” he said.
