Salasya pledges to boost Mt Kenya’s economy

Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya has pledged to support and enhance Mt Kenya’s key economic sectors as part of his 2027 presidential campaign.
In a detailed statement shared on his social media channels on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, Salasya emphasised the importance of the region’s specific economic activities, including tea and coffee farming in Nyeri, rice cultivation in Kirinyaga, avocado farming in Murang’a, and dairy production in Kiambu.
The vocal lawmaker also highlighted the significance of horticulture in Laikipia, miraa trade in Meru and Embu, and livestock farming in Tharaka Nithi.
“I am committed to supporting your key economic activities across all Mt Kenya counties. Nyeri: Tea and coffee farming, dairy, beekeeping, and tourism around Mt Kenya and the Aberdares. Kirinyaga: Rice farming through the Mwea Irrigation Scheme, horticulture, and coffee. Murang’a: Avocado farming (a national leader), coffee and tea farming, dairy, and fruit processing. Kiambu: Dairy (notably Githunguri Dairy), coffee farming, real estate, retail, and manufacturing due to proximity to Nairobi,” Salasya pledged.
“Nyandarua: Irish potatoes, cabbage farming, dairy, and highland vegetables. Embu: Miraa (especially in Mbeere), coffee, mangoes, dairy, poultry, and macadamia farming. Meru: Miraa trade (a vital livelihood), tea, coffee, dairy farming, and tourism via Mt Kenya National Park. Laikipia: Livestock ranching, horticulture through irrigation, dairy, and ecotourism from wildlife conservancies. Tharaka Nithi: Dairy and goat farming, sorghum, millet, beekeeping, and tea in the upper zones.”
In addition, the youthful parliamentarian emphasised the need to modernise the agricultural sector to help the region regain its economic glory.

“These sectors are the heartbeat of Mt Kenya’s economy. I will work closely with you to revive, modernise, and expand them so that the region regains its rightful place in Kenya’s economic leadership,” he stated.
He further expressed his vision for national progress through reviving key economic sectors.
“The journey to reclaim our nation’s glory begins now, and Mt Kenya will lead from the front,” Salasya added.
Presidential bid
Salasya’s commitment aligns with his broader campaign focus on industrialisation, job creation, and economic empowerment. He previously declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2027, citing the need for transformative leadership that addresses the country’s manufacturing and industrialisation challenges.
According to him, the decision was largely fuelled by the current state of political turmoil in the country, and it was key that he run to try and give the country a change in leadership.
“Fellow Kenyans, after deep reflections and careful considerations of the state of our nation, I, Peter Kalerwa Salasya, the Member of Parliament for the Mumias East constituency, hereby declare my intention to vie for the presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the 2027 general elections,” he stated.

He also expressed that it stemmed from a profound desire to offer bold, transformative leadership, one that would propel Kenya into a future of industrial growth, economic empowerment, and social justice.
“My decision is not taken lightly; it comes from a deep desire to offer transformative leadership that will reorient our nation for industrial growth, economic empowerment, and social justice,” he asserted.
“Kenya is at a crucial juncture: we cannot continue sending our labour and talent abroad while our industries falter and our youth remain mired in unemployment. I am convinced that Kenya must industrialise, innovate, and create sustainable employment opportunities to unlock the immense potential within our people.”
