Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has challenged President William Ruto’s affordable housing project, saying house rent should instead be reduced significantly as a result of the housing programme.

In a post on his official X account on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Salasya maintained that Ruto’s Affordable Housing Programme should help reduce the cost of house rents since it is the government’s main project.

“By now the the rent prices should have reduced drastically due to the affordable housing programme being run by Kenya Kwanza as their main project,” Salasya said.

According to the legislator, the Affordable Housing programme is not helping Kenyans as it should have.

“If your rent hasn’t gone down by now, then this housing programme is not helping Kenyans in general. If I am lying, say I am a fool,” he added.

Amisi slams govt on housing project

Meanwhile, on the other hand, Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi was in the spotlight, arguing that the affordable housing program is not a priority for Kenyans.

Taking to X on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker has said the affordable housing program is meant to enrich certain individuals at the expense of the taxpayers.

”The housing program was not a priority to Kenyans but a money minting program for the bourgeois at the total loss to the Kenyans’ payslips. The level of desperation from young Kenyans is historic and unless government sober up and address the elephant in the room, the country is staring at ungovernable population,” Amisi said.

Ruto defends housing plan

Meanwhile, as of July 2025, President William Ruto had announced that the government’s Affordable Housing programme had already employed more than 320,000 young people across the country, adding that the initiative is a key part of his administration’s strategy to address the growing unemployment crisis among the country’s young generation.

Speaking in Kilimani, Nairobi, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, President Ruto said that by that time, more than 320,000 youths were engaged in active construction roles across various housing project sites spread throughout Kenya.

“As we speak, we have more than 320,000 youths working under the Affordable Housing programme across Kenya,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ruto’s affordable housing program has been receiving rejection from a section of elected leaders. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna voiced strong opposition to the initiative on September 25, 2025, during Senate proceedings. Sifuna’s critique focused on procedural illegality and potential political interference.
