‘You are going to end up with 2 ODMs’ – Saboti MP Caleb Amisi warns party officials

Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has warned the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) officials of party split over wrangles.
Speaking on Sunday, February 9, 2025, during the ODM western convention in Kakamega County, the MP demanded the party leadership to give a way forward about the party’s political stand.
He added that after Raila Odinga is done with the African Union Commission (AUC) bid, they would meet as ODM because they need the party leadership to tell them whether the party is in government or not.
Amisi says failure to make a clear directive might split the party into two groups, one of those supporting President William Ruto’s regime while the other group will remain in opposition.
“Na sai tunasema itafika wakati baba ametoka kule AU tutakuja hapa na party leaders muwe tayari kutueleza are we in the government or we are not and if you do not do that you are going to end up with two ODMs. You will have ODM in government and ODM in opposition,”MP Amisi said.
He further cautioned the party officials against destroying the party legacy, adding that if ODM splits, they will have spoilt the hard work, effort and sacrifices Odinga made for the party as a founding leader.
“You will have done a disservice of the many years Raila Odinga has fought for this party. You (leaders) are sitting on a seat as the party leader who founded this party is struggling to get a seat in AU but you are comfortable as MPs as governors but Raila ako kwa barabara. If you spoil this party you would have spoilt the work of Raila Odinga of many years,” he added.

Party divided
This comes in the wake of a rift between the party’s top officials, with one section fully supporting Ruto’s broad-based government, while the other urging ODM to retain its identity as an opposition party.
ODM’s National Chairperson and Homa Bay County governor Gladys Wanga has openly declared support for the Kenya-Kwanza government despite the party’s Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna urging otherwise.
Sifuna’s sentiments have also been echoed by ODM interim party leader Anyang’ Nyong’o who has urged members of parliament and elected ODM leaders to refrain from the urge to join the ruling coalition’s praise and worship choir.

Sifuna on ODM’s position
Sifuna maintains that former ODM party leader Raila Odinga left him instructions on how to navigate and prepare the party for the next general election and that his decisions on these matters have the blessings of Odinga who is vying for the African Union Commission chairperson seat.
A section of ODM leaders who have been on a collision path with the secretary-general has declared him a marked man.
