President William Ruto has talked with his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta over his retirement benefits and privileges, State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed has said.

In a statement on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, Mohamed confirmed the meeting between President Ruto and Uhuru.

According to Mohamed, their conversation was centred around how the government would facilitate the smooth function of Uhuru’s office.

“This morning, President William Ruto had a conversation with his predecessor in office, the 4th President, President Uhuru Kenyatta, regarding concerns about facilitating the functioning of the retired President’s office,” the statement read in part.

Following the conversation, the Statehouse Spokesperson announced that the Head of State had constituted a team led by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei to address the issues raised by the Spokesperson in the Office of the Fourth President Kanze Dena on Monday, June 10, 2024.

“President Ruto has consequently constituted a team, led by the Head of Public Service, to immediately address all the issues raised, including the location of the retired President’s office and the attendant staff establishment,” Mohamed added.

Uhuru’s concerns

Kanze Dena who served as StateHouse spokesperson in the previous government accused the current regime of denying Uhuru funds to run his office.

According to Dena, Uhuru’s office had not received a cent despite being allocated Ksh503 million for the current financial year.

Dena also said that Uhuru had not received new vehicles as required by law, forcing him to use the old transitional fleet that the State House has refused to fuel.

“In the 2023/2024 financial year, which ends in a few weeks, the budget allocation to this office was Ksh503 million. The year is ending without the office having access to this allocation. The total amount for the two years that we have not had access to is about Ksh1 billion,” Kanze Dena added.

However, In a quick rebuttal, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura dismissed some of the reports raised by Dena. On the issue of the office, Mwaura insisted that the government cannot pay for an office that the former President owns.
