Newly appointed Raila Odinga’s Presidential Campaign Secretariat spokesperson Prof Makau Mutua has come out to hit out at Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka over his claims that the ODM boss is bound to support his presidential bid following a deal they had in 2017.

In a press conference yesterday, Kalonzo revealed that Prof Mutua and Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana were the sole depositories of the deal he had with Raila. Kibwana and Mutua were required to, according to the deal, reveal the content of the deal should any of the parties involved – Raila and Kalonzo – act in breach of the deal.

Prof Mutua has, however, come out to dismiss the existence of the deal noting that should the deal exist as claimed by Kalonzo, then it would have died after the collapse of the Nasa coalition which occurred in 2020.

The law professor, therefore, urged the Wiper leader to forget about the said deal and find a way through which he can strike a fresh deal with Raila who is currently the Azimio la Umoja’s preferred presidential candidate.

“The deal is of no use in the current political dispensation for us to litigate discussion that took place in 2017. What both Kalonzo and Raila need to do is to come to the table and negotiate in the context of Azimio and for Kalonzo to find a place for himself within the broad umbrella that we are building,” Prof Mutua was quoted as saying by a local publication.

Mutua who told the publication that he was speaking on behalf of Raila, further told Kalonzo that they are confident that they will win the elections whether Kalonzo joins them or not but noted that they would appreciate his support.

Mutua further insisted that the August 8 presidential election is between Deputy President William Ruto and Raila and that it is high time Kalonzo joined the Azimio team or risks being left out.

“We are going to win the elections on August 9 whether Kalonzo joins us or not,” Mutua said.

“It is a forgone conclusion that Raila will be the presidential candidate for Azimio la Umoja whose main challenger is Deputy President William Ruto. Kalonzo should contemplate on that and then start negotiating with that in mind,” he added.
