Petition filed seeking to block parliamentary speakers from political activities
By Zipporah Ngwatu, July 8, 2026A human rights organisation, Vocal Africa, has filed a petition at the Milimani High Court seeking orders blocking the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and the Senate Speaker Amason Kingi from engaging in politics.
The petitioner argues that the two have been actively engaging in campaigns while using public resources attached to their offices and wants the court to immediately stop them.
According to Vocal Africa, there is a need for the court to intervene and bar the two speakers from using the security detail attached to them, the motorcade, among other things, citing that their actions go against the Election Campaign Financing Act.
“A declaration that any use of the public moral authority, motorcades, security, details, public platforms, or resources associated with the office of Speaker for partisan campaign purposes constitutes an unlawful use of public resources in breach of Section 16(2) of the Election Campaign Financing Act,” part of the orders sought reads.
