Orengo says June 25 commemorations showcased Kenyans’ patriotism

Siaya Governor James Orengo has lauded Kenyans for what he termed as an overwhelming display of patriotism after citizens across the country and abroad joined commemorations marking the second anniversary of the June 25 Gen Z protests.

Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi on Thursday, June 26,2026 during demonstrations organised by families of victims killed during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests, Orengo said participation witnessed across different parts of Kenya reflected a united nation standing in solidarity with families still seeking justice.

“We have reports of participation in this commemoration in the whole country. You have seen what was happening in Europe, in Western Kenya, in Rift Valley and all these places have shown a spirit of patriotism,” Orengo said.

The governor noted that the commemorations had gone beyond Nairobi, saying Kenyans had collectively demonstrated commitment to honouring those who lost their lives during last year’s protests.

Kenyans stand in solidarity

Orengo thanked citizens who either joined the demonstrations physically or stayed away from their normal daily activities in solidarity with grieving families remembering victims of police brutality.

“There are no activities going on and people will either come out or stay at home. So we want to thank Kenyans for their patriotism,” he stated.

He described Thursday’s anniversary protests as a successful national show of unity, saying citizens had used the day to honour young people who paid the ultimate price while demanding accountability and better governance.

“Our main stay overall today was a successful day and continues to be a successful day,” Orengo added.

Tension marks Parliament gathering

The remarks came amid heavy security deployment outside Parliament Buildings where families, activists and opposition leaders had gathered hoping to lay flowers in memory of victims killed during the June 25, 2024 protests.

Police later moved to disperse sections of the crowd, forcing Orengo to leave the area on a boda boda after tension escalated near Parliament.

Calls for constitutional freedoms

Before the demonstrations, Orengo maintained that organisers had followed the law and police should facilitate peaceful protests.

“When somebody gives notice of a demonstration in accordance with the law, the police are required to provide security and protect the rights of those who are demonstrating,” he said.
