Orengo: Ol Kalou win shows Ruto is headed for a one-term presidency
By Emmanuel Rono, July 17, 2026Siaya Governor James Orengo has said the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) victory in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election is a strong indication of changing political fortunes ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement on his X account on Thursday, July 16, 2026, Orengo described the outcome as a triumph for ordinary Kenyans, saying the electorate had sent a powerful political message to President William Ruto’s administration.

“DCP’s Sammy Douglas Waweru’s decisive win in Ol Kalou represents a triumph for ordinary citizens. It is a clear signal that the ground has shifted, and President Ruto should prepare for a single term,” Orengo said.
Orengo said the outcome demonstrated that ordinary citizens were determined to chart a new political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“DCP ikishinda Ol Kalou, hiyo ni ushindi ya sisi sote. Sisi wa Linda Mwananchi, DCP ikishinda na Katititi akishinda, hiyo ni ushindi wetu kama Wakenya wote,” Orengo said.
Congratulations to DCP team
He congratulated the DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua for spearheading the campaign, saying he had taken the lead in challenging President Ruto’s government.

Orengo urged opposition supporters across the country to unite, saying the coalition’s success would depend on bringing together communities from different regions.
“Tunampatia kongole Bwana Gachagua kwa kuwa kwa mstari wa mbele ya kupigana na Kasongo,” he said, before leading supporters in chants of, “Kasongo apigwe ama asipigwe?”
“Sasa watu wa Kisumu washikane na watu wa Nyeri. Hiyo inawezekana?… Tutafanya kazi pamoja ndio tuendelee mbele,” he said.
Gachagua-Kindiki congratulates DPC’s first MP
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also hailed the election of Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru as the Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency, describing the victory as a historic milestone for the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) and a clear expression of the people’s will.

In a statement on Thursday, July 16, 2026, Gachagua congratulated Kamau and thanked voters for handing the party its first seat in the National Assembly.
“Congratulations, Hon. Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, on your historic election as the Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou Constituency. You have won by a resounding margin, reflecting the unmistakable voice of the people,” Gachagua said.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Thursday, July 16, 2026, congratulated Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
In a post on X after polling stations closed, Kindiki wrote: “Congratulations Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau on your imminent victory in the by-election held today for the MP seat for Ol Kalou constituency. Unite the residents and serve them all without distinction.”
