Orengo insists Linda Mwananchi faction remains part of ODM

Siaya Governor James Orengo has reaffirmed that the Linda Mwananchi faction remains an integral part of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), rejecting claims of a split or exit from the party.

In an interview on March 9, 2026, Orengo said the group is committed to fighting for the soul of ODM from within its structures.

“Linda Mwananchi will continue to fight for the soul of the party,” Orengo stated. Clarifying questions about whether the contest was happening outside the party, he added: “From within ODM.”

He emphasised that no one should be misled into thinking the group is leaving.

We are part of ODM,” he said.

Orengo highlighted key positions held by allies, including Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi, noting that the caucus remains committed to the party’s principles and values.

Factional tensions

The statements come amid ongoing tensions within ODM, where two main factions have emerged: the Linda Ground group, aligned with Oburu Odinga, and the Linda Mwananchi caucus, led by Sifuna and supported by Orengo, Babu Owino, and Osotsi.

The divide centres on differing views regarding negotiations with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and preparations for the 2027 elections.

Linda Mwananchi opposes rapprochement with the government, arguing that ODM must remain firmly in opposition to preserve its integrity and founding principles.

The faction has staged a series of “meet-the-people” rallies across counties, including Busia, Kitengela, Kakamega, and Vihiga. Despite incidents of stone-pelting and intimidation, Orengo described the movement as an unstoppable “tsunami” that would continue with or without state interference.

Generational push and reformist focus

Orengo and his allies have positioned the faction as a reformist caucus committed to upholding ODM’s core values. Osotsi said protection comes from the people, not external forces, warning that government interference could destabilise the country.

Even rivals, such as Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, welcomed the faction, calling the rivalry a demonstration of healthy democracy, “the ‘D’ in ODM,” provided activities remain peaceful.

Orengo has repeatedly dismissed notions of permanent division, rejecting ideas of forming a new party under the Linda Mwananchi banner.

The faction’s efforts reflect a generational shift within ODM, emphasising opposition purity, principled leadership, and constitutional adherence.
