Orengo and Osotsi call for Ruto’s impeachment following his recent remarks

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and Siaya Governor James Orengo have called for the impeachment of President William Ruto following his recent utterances directed at the opposition.

While speaking during a Linda Mwananchi presser on Wednesday, March 18, 2025, Orengo stated that a state officer of the calibre of President Ruto must conduct themselves in ways that bring honour to the nation and dignity to the office they hold.

He added that the Constitution envisages that a state officer must refrain from hate speech, noting that the president’s recent remarks constitute pure hate speech.

“I also want to join in by saying the president must be called to order. And quite rightly, as stated by Senator Godfrey, will so see the grounds of impeachment normally include gross violation of the law and violation of the Constitution,” Orengo stated.

“So his utterances constitute an abomination. And if you were in a society where the leadership, particularly in the assemblies, including the parliament, is what it is, I agree with God that the only way the president can be called to order is by impeachment or a sanction by way of a resolution in Parliament, and we have a precedent for those kinds of infractions.”

According to Orengo, unlike the former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, who was the first person to throw the attack, cant be judged harshly even if he speaks in the manner in which Ruto spoke, since he has not taken an oath of office like Ruto did

Orengo went ahead to state that Ruto’s utterances constitute an abomination. He further noted that in jurisdictions where parliaments and assemblies are properly constituted, the president could have been called to order through impeachment or sanctioned via a parliamentary resolution.

Osostsi’s view

Osotsi, on his side, expressed his disappointment with the president’s statements towards the opposition during his developmental tour in the Western region.

He said Ruto’s remarks do not portray a leader who should hold the presidency and added that his utterances border on misconduct, which is a ground for impeachment. Osotsi urged that a president should respect the laws of the land, the Constitution, and alternative opinions.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also echoed these sentiments, expressing his dissatisfaction with the push-and-pull between the president and the united opposition. He stated that such behaviour sets a wrong precedent and does not present a good example for young, emerging leaders.

This comes at a time when President William Ruto and his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua have taken their rivalry to unprecedented levels.

The political fallout has now escalated into a full-blown confrontation, with the president extending his attacks to key figures within the opposition, often issuing sharp but indirect remarks without naming specific individuals.

The two camps have become deeply entrenched in a bitter standoff, marked by raw insults, mudslinging, name-calling, and attacks of the lowest order.

Allies of President Ruto have come out strongly in his defence, urging him to stay the course. According to them, it is Gachagua who initiated the conflict. Notably, Mogotio MP Reuben Kiborek has warned that the former deputy president is yet to experience the full force of the political onslaught, signalling that the feud is far from over.
