Opiyo Wandayi: Those opposing broad-based govt risk losing their seats in 2027
Petroleum and Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has warned that those opposing the broad-based government risk losing their seats in 2027.
According to Wandayi, the late former prime minister Raila Odinga was not wrong in his decision that saw the so-called ODM experts join President William Ruto’s administration.
Speaking while attending prayer service at St Peter’s Ugunja Catholic Church on Sunday, December 14, 2025, Wandayi said the future is broad-based, and the victory of Ugunja MP Moses Omondi is a clear testimony that the initiative will grow and thrive beyond 2027.
“Kenyans are keenly watching talks and political stands of certain leaders in this country, and I am sure the noisy characters will be judged accordingly by the electorate on the 2027 judgment day,” Wandayi said.

Ruto’s Nyanza region support
Wandayi further said that the ruling Kenya Kwanza government, which has embraced them, did not get much support from the Luo community, and yet the President swallowed his pride and accommodated them, so he was not ready to abandon President Ruto any day or any time.
“Moses is a product of broad-based government and a clear testimony that the future is bright with initiative. Those opposing the initiative may have difficulties in retaining their seats after the 2027 elections,” Wandayi said.
The former Ugunja MP further noted that the grounds are shifting and Nyanza is gaining influence with the Ruto-led administration, which is favouring the region, as indicated by political manoeuvres and development projects aimed at strengthening ties.
“There is no error made by Raila when he left us in the hands of President Ruto, so those who have contrary opinions should think twice and consider backing him when room for favour is not yet closed,” he said.

Development projects
He noted that Ksh1 billion was released by the Ruto administration to complete the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga stadium and the building of a level 5 hospital in Siaya.
“We owe Ruto, and the debt should be paid in 2027. It was just recently when the President officially opened the Ksh 1.2 billion Ugunja-Sega-Ukwala water project,” Wandayi remarked.
Wandayi said the Nyanza region has been in opposition for years, with limited or no development.
He further urged Nyanza residents not to gamble with their votes in 2027.
“We are left in an able government, and we are not going to support an initiative that would see us exiting a government that we have stabilised. We are right in the government that we in the past have been struggling to be part of,” he added.
