The ODM party has pledged to hold the government accountable in 2025 in a passionate New Year’s message by the largest opposition formation in the country.

In a statement by the party’s executive director Oduor Ong’wen on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, ODM highlighted the challenges they faced earlier in the year including some of their lucky breaks witnessed during the same period.

“As we look to 2025, we call upon all Kenyans to embrace hope and unity. The challenges we face can only be overcome if we stand together, putting the interests of the nation above all else. ODM pledges to continue holding the government accountable while offering pragmatic solutions to the issues affecting our people,” Ong’wen said.

Social justice

“This year has been one of resilience, growth, and renewed determination as we navigated challenges and celebrated victories together as a movement and as a nation.”

The party assured Kenyans of their commitment to continue advocating for social justice in the country despite being co-opted in the ruling Kenya-Kwanza administration led by President William Ruto.

“We are proud of our unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy, social justice, and inclusivity that define our party’s legacy. As ODM, we have continued to stand firm in advocating for policies and actions that uplift the lives of all Kenyans. Whether in championing justice, fighting for electoral reforms, or defending devolution, we have remained steadfast in our resolve to build a better Kenya,” the party added.

Challenges in the country

ODM equally noted that while the country grapples with a host of challenges, such as rising cost of living, unemployment, and inequalities, it would not tire of advocating for better governance.

“ODM remains committed to working tirelessly to ensure that every Kenyan has access to decent livelihoods, quality healthcare, and education. Our vision for a united, prosperous, and equitable Kenya remains unwavering,” the party observed.

In 2024, ODM got a significant share in Ruto’s government after five party leaders in the opposition outfit were handed senior cabinet positions, throwing the opposition coalition into disarray.

Former Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi was made Cabinet Secretary for Energy & Petroleum while former ODM deputy party leaders Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya got the Blue Economy and Cooperative dockets respectively. Former ODM National Chairman John Mbadi was handed the critical Treasury docket while Askul Moe got the East African Community (EAC), ASALs & Regional Development docket.
