The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is to start its grassroots elections today. Party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said the grassroots elections are designed to inspire active community involvement, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among citizens regarding their governance.

“The party anticipates a diverse array of candidates vying for positions, reflecting the rich tapestry of grassroots leadership and ensuring a broad spectrum of voices and perspectives within the party,” said Sifuna.

In preparation for this significant electoral event, the party has undertaken extensive outreach programmes to educate voters about the election process. Yesterday in Kisumu, a concerted effort led by local MPs, including Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron, focused on rallying residents to engage in this democratic exercise.

Oron emphasised that the initiative aims to boost voter awareness and counteract the prevalent apathy often associated with grassroots elections.

“The elections will employ a transparent voting process, with stringent measures to ensure fairness and security,” Oron stated confidently.

He was joined by Deputy Governor Mathews Owili, Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor, Nyando MP Jared Okello, Kisumu County MP Ruth Odinga, youth coordinator Bob Onyango alias CEO and Kisumu County Assembly minority chief whip Seth Kanga.

These leaders indicated that media representatives, along with observers and volunteers from various civil society organisations, will monitor the electoral proceedings, reinforcing the commitment to a credible and transparent process.

As these elections unfold, Owili remarked that they will serve not only as a means of selecting local leaders but also as a platform for promoting democratic values, accountability, and community development.

Tomorrow’s elections will occur at the ward levels, while branch elections are scheduled for April 9.
