Oburu Odinga breaks silence on Senator Godfrey Osotsi’s Kisumu assault

By , April 9, 2026

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Oburu Odinga, has condemned the attack on Vihiga Senator Godfery Osotsi, calling for urgent action against the perpetrators.

Taking to his official X account on Thursday, April 9, 2026, the ODM leader described the attack as a cowardly act.

“It is with a heavy heart and profound concern that I have received news of the physical attack on the Senator of Vihiga County, Hon. Godfrey Osotsi. On behalf of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the entire leadership fraternity, I wish Senator Osotsi a full and speedy recovery,” Oburu said.

According to the ODM leader, the Osotsi’s attack was not only unfortunate but utterly unacceptable in a civilised, democratic society.

“We must be clear: Violence has no place in our political discourse. Differences in opinion, ideology, or political affiliation should never be settled through physical confrontation or intimidation,” Oburu explained.

Oburu further explained that as a party, ODM remains committed to the pillars of democracy, the rule of law, and the respectful exchange of ideas while extending his support in condemning violence.

“I wish to reiterate our unwavering stance: we do not support, condone, or tolerate violence in any form. Such acts of aggression are an affront to the democratic gains we have fought so hard to secure for this nation,” Oburu said.

At the same time, the ODM leader called on security agencies to conduct a swift, thorough, and impartial investigation into the persons behind Osotsi’s attack

“I strongly condemn this cowardly act and call upon the relevant security agencies to conduct a swift, thorough, and impartial investigation. The perpetrators must be held accountable to the full extent of the law to serve as a deterrent against future acts of political hooliganism. Let us remain a nation guided by peace, tolerance, and mutual respect. We must not allow the actions of a few to jeopardise the stability of our country,” he added.

Osotsi attack

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi is nursing injuries at the Karen Hospital following an assault by a group of armed goons in Kisumu County on Wednesday, April 8.

According to Derick Luvega, Director of Communication at the Vihiga Senate Office, Osotsi had made a routine visit to the Acacia area to get a haircut before proceeding to Java restaurant, where he met a friend and also interacted with members of the public.

Shortly after, a group of gun-wielding individuals is said to have confronted him, questioning him over his political allegiance.

Luvega indicated that Osotsi’s security detail exercised restraint to avoid discharging firearms in public and hurting innocent lives in the process.

“We strongly condemn this barbaric and cowardly act, which appears to have been premeditated and orchestrated,” the statement read in part.

“It is important to emphasise that this isolated incident should not, in any way, be used to tarnish the image of the people of Kisumu, who have consistently demonstrated warmth and hospitality, as evidenced by the Senator’s free movement and interactions prior to the attack.”
