Oburu meets Gachagua and Kalonzo in Machakos

By , February 13, 2026

The former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, held talks with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Odinga in Machakos at the home of Senator Agnes Kavindu, following their condolence visit after the passing of her son, Moses Muthama.

Kiambu Senator Karung’o Thang’wah, who accompanied Gachagua to Machakos, shared the photos on Friday, February 13, 2026, confirming the meeting.

The two, who have often been on opposite sides, trading political blows, are captured sharing a light moment, greeting each other, and even hugging while also appearing solemn in the sombre mood of the funeral.

“Sen. Dr Oburu has been reminded by H.E RiggyG that Canaan is in the Middle East while Singapore is in Asia, so there is no way you can reach Canaan through Singapore unless you have no sense of direction and or, are completely lost,” the Kiambu senator’s statement read.

At the same gathering, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was also present, sharing similar moments with Oburu.

Other leaders allied to the two united opposition principals were present, including Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, and Makueni Governor Mutula Junior. Rigathi Gachagua was accompanied by his wife, Pastor Dorcas Gachagua.

Kalonzo Muthama rift

Kalonzo was also seen seated close to former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama, who also doubles as the father of the deceased.

The two have not been on good terms politically in recent years. In the run-up to the 2022 elections, Muthama, then Vice Chair of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), opposed Kalonzo, who was on the opposite side of the political divide.

Their political rift contributed to Muthama losing the Machakos gubernatorial seat to Wavinya Ndeti.

Oburu Odinga has often used every platform to criticise former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over ‘shares’ remarks he used to make before his ouster from the deputy president position, emphasising that ODM cannot enter into a coalition arrangement with Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), since, according to him, his party does not champion inclusivity.

Gachagua’s failed condolence visit

This also comes days after Gachagua failed to visit Kang’o Ka Jaromogi to pay tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga after promising to do so, saying that he had notified the family, including Oburu, of the visit.

Earlier, some ODM leaders had warned Gachagua against visiting the region, but Oburu defended him, stating that everyone, regardless of their political standing, has a right to visit and mourn with the family, since, according to Oburu, the late Raila never harboured political animosity and had nothing personal when it came to politics.

This marks the first time Oburu Odinga has shared the same room with Rigathi Gachagua.
