Nyutu: Matiang’i should form party that has support from his region

Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu has advised presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i to form his own political party.

Speaking during a local TV interview on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, Nyutu advised the presidential candidate to first form a political outfit that will command support from his region in the ethnic-based reality of Kenyan politics.

“Fred Matiang’i does not want to form his party. He wants to ride on the Jubilee party. He is a presidential candidate, but he does not want to form a party. Matiang’i should have come up with a party that has support from the Gusii region first,” he stated.

Reality of Kenyan politics

“We must not close our eyes to the reality of politics in our country. Most of the parties we have are ethnic-based, and parties are associated with their party leaders.
“For instance, ODM’s strongest support is found in the Luo Nyanza, and its leader is Raila Odinga. The PAA of Kingi has members from around Kilifi, where it has its strongest support,” he added.

His sentiments were, however, dismissed by Soy MP David Kiplagat, who chided the senator for regionalising national politics and dividing Kenyans.

“This is an attempt to subdivide Kenyans into regions and tell people that they need to align to a particular group or region. We have a united nation called Kenyans, and when electing the president, we do it for him to be a unifying factor. It is unfortunate that we still have people advancing the narrow minds of regions,” he stated.

Nyutu’s remarks come after Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni accused the former deputy president, Rigathi Gachagua, of attempting to bully Fred Matiang’i.

Kioni on Gachagua

Speaking on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Kioni claimed that Gachagua had made similar proposals to Matiang’i, warning him against joining Jubilee and advising him to form a Kisii-based party in order for him to negotiate with his fellow opposition principals.

“You tell him it out openly; in fact, on one occasion, you can remember Gachagua telling Matiangi, ‘Go to Kisii and come with a village party; we negotiate.’”

He also went ahead to accuse the DCP party leader of secretly working with Ruto, as he labels his party as an appendage of the government.
