Nyali MP Mohammed Ali refutes 2027 alliance rumours with Mombasa Governor Nassir

By , November 1, 2025

Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali has publicly dismissed rumours of a political alliance with Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race.

Taking to X, Ali strongly refuted claims that he had agreed to back Nassir’s re-election bid, instead issuing a sharp critique of the governor’s performance.

“A rumour has surfaced claiming that I have come into an agreement with Mombasa’s Governor @A_S_Nassir to support his second term in office in 2027,” Ali posted, accompanying his message with the Mombasa County emblem.

He followed with a blunt rebuttal, stating, “With the zero development record he has shown, the only conversation I will hold with him is about how he needs to pack up and go home.” His remarks highlight his intent to challenge Nassir’s leadership and appeal to Mombasa residents dissatisfied with the county’s progress.

Change candidate

Ali, elected under the UDA party, further addressed his critics, cautioning political rivals against spreading misinformation. “To the Propagandists: Your work will be difficult this time round because Mombasa people will not fall for theatrics. They are desperate for change, and change is coming!” he declared.

Emerging rift

Political analyst Herman Manyora weighed in on the unfolding political rivalry during an interview on his YouTube channel on October 31, 2025.

He suggested that Ali could pose a serious threat to Nassir’s re-election, noting that the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has reshaped the coastal political landscape.

“Mohamed Ali is really scary. Because he comes with the thinking that it is possible for a non-coastal to be governor of Mombasa. The narrative has been, ‘It must be a coastal puzzle.’ Now he’s bringing the non-coastal angle,” Manyora said.

ODM influence

According to Manyora, ODM’s influence in the region has waned, especially following Raila’s demise and what he described as the party’s “Luo dominance” under figures like Gladys Wanga.

He noted that this shift may disadvantage Nassir, an ODM member, while Ali’s outreach to leaders such as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka could enhance his cross-party appeal. “The presence of opposition in Mombasa means Nassir cannot sit pretty,” Manyora remarked.
