Nyakera says DCP doesn’t need rescuing, tells ODM defectors party is growing
Nairobi’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) patron Irungu Nyakera has sent a firm message to defectors from Orange Democratic Movement who are considering a move to Democracy for Citizens Party, making it clear that the party does not require rescuing.
Nyakera maintained that DCP is already strong, steadily growing, and firmly anchored on the commitment and grassroots work of its loyal members. He said the party’s stability and momentum are the result of sustained internal organisation and shared ideals, not last-minute political realignments, adding that those joining must be ready to contribute to the party’s vision rather than seek to reposition it.

Nyakera issued the remarks on Thursday, December 4, 2025, a day after DCP Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua expressed readiness to welcome politicians crossing over from ODM. The statement appears aimed at addressing chatter suggesting that ODM defections were a lifeline for the young party.
In his statement, Nyakera said DCP had been built through commitment and sacrifice from its early members, and new entrants were joining an already rising force, not saving it.
“Yesterday, our DCP Party Leader, Hon. Rigathi Gachagua, expressed openness in welcoming individuals transitioning from ODM to DCP. As we receive them, it is important to emphasise that DCP is a party built through dedication, sacrifice, and consistent work by its loyal members. Anyone joining us does so to contribute to an already strong and growing organisation, not to rescue it. DCP has capable sons and daughters who have carried its vision with integrity and continue to drive its agenda forward,” he said.

Nyakera also used the moment to restate his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election, confirming he will be seeking the DCP ticket for Nairobi governor.
“I also reaffirm my intention to seek the Nairobi Governor seat in 2027 under the DCP banner. My commitment to the party and to the people remains steadfast, and I will pursue the party ticket with focus, discipline, and respect for our democratic processes,” he said.
The statement reflects the increasing confidence within DCP following recent by-election performances and renewed visibility in national politics.
