‘Nothing short of stealing the will of the people’ – Senator Sifuna faults Speaker Wetang’ula over National Assembly majority rule

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has faulted National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula over his latest ruling declaring the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition as the majority party in the House.
Taking to his official X account shortly after Wetang’ula gave his ruling, Sifuna stated that the court was clear that the majority and minority sides in Parliament were determined by the voters during the August 9, 2022, general election.
Wetang’ula’s ruling
According to the lawmaker, Wetang’ula’s latest ruling is nothing short of stealing the will of the people.
“The court was clear that the majority/minority was determined by the voter on 9th August 2022. What happened and what is happening now is nothing short of stealing the will of the people,” Sifuna stated.

Wetang’ula’s ruling
Wetang’ula on Wednesday, February 12, declared the Kenya Kwanza Coalition as the majority side in the National Assembly.
While delivering the verdict, Wetang’ula informed the house that the High Court ruling did not designate which side was the majority and the minority but only annulled his earlier declaration.

The speaker went on to explain that he had not received a communication from Azimio or Kenya Kwanza announcing changes in its house leadership.
He went on to announce that the house leadership would remain unchanged. This means MP Kimani Ichung’wah will continue serving as the Majority Leader while Junet will resume his minority role.
“I have not received any further communication from Kenya Kwanza Coalition replacing the Member of Parliament for Kikuyu, the member for Kilifi, the member for South Mugirango, and the member for Marsabit County as their preferred leadership in the house.
“Similarly, I have not received communication from the Azimio One Kenya Coalition party replacing the Suna East MP, the Kathiani MP, the Suba North MP, and the Member for Embakasi West as preferred leadership in the house,” Wetang’ula stated.
“Consequently, the leadership of the house remains unchanged,” he ruled.
