Njeri Maina: I won’t campaign nationally if opposition fails to field one candidate
Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has stated that she will not take part in national campaigns if the opposition fails to unite behind a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview with a local television station on Monday, June 1, 2026, the outspoken lawmaker urged opposition leaders to put aside their individual ambitions and agree on one candidate to challenge President William Ruto.

According to Maina, the opposition should not underestimate the task ahead, noting that President Ruto remains a formidable political opponent with a well-established national network.
She argued that while opposition leaders are focused on unseating the President, Ruto is also actively traversing the country in search of support ahead of the next election.
“If the opposition does not field a single ticket for the presidency, I will have no business engaging in national campaigns. The greater good of the republic must matter to us all beyond the satisfaction of personal egos,” Njeri Maina said.
Tifa polls
Maina further pointed to recent opinion polls, which suggest that if elections were held today, no candidate would comfortably secure the constitutional threshold of 50 per cent plus one vote required to win outright, potentially forcing a runoff.
For that reason, she called on opposition leaders to approach the 2027 contest strategically and present a united front to voters.
Linda Mwananchi- Opposition merger

Leaders within the United Opposition have repeatedly maintained that although several principals have presidential ambitions, they will at the appropriate time rally behind one candidate to face President Ruto.
There have also been growing indications of possible cooperation between the United Opposition and the Linda Mwananchi movement. Both sides have signalled a willingness to work together in pursuit of their shared objective of removing the current administration from power after a single term.
Sifuna’s view
Linda Mwananchi movement leader Edwin Sifuna has stated that for the current regime to be removed from power, there must be unity among opposition leaders and those who subscribe to the Wantam movement.
He added that, on his part, he cannot afford to see President William Ruto return to power. Sifuna urged his colleagues in the opposition to continue with their efforts, expressing confidence that their paths will eventually intersect in the future as they work towards a common goal.
