Ngunjiri Wambugu: United opposition must give number 1 or 2 slot to Mt Kenya

By , February 5, 2026

Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) Ngunjiri Wambugu has stated that the united opposition must allocate either the number one or number two leadership position to the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Taking to his official Facebook page on the night of Wednesday, February 4, 2026, while reacting to outcomes of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Aspirants Forum hosted by President William Ruto at State House, Wambugu argued that the meeting had confirmed that Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is firmly positioned to retain the number two slot within the ruling party’s political structure.

“One of the outcomes from today’s UDA meeting is the reality that Kindiki is in the No. 2 slot to stay,” Wambugu stated.

Mt Kenya’s significance

He further argued that this political reality places pressure on the opposition to recognise Mt Kenya’s significance by offering the region one of the top two positions in any united opposition arrangement.

“This means the united opposition must give the No. 1 or No. 2 slot to Mt Kenya. The Mt takes these things very seriously, sana,” he stated.

UDA party aspirant numbers

Wambugu’s remarks come hours after the UDA party said it has strong grassroots support across the country, with the highest number of fully paid-up aspirants coming from the Rift Valley and Mt Kenya regions.

The President William Ruto-led party says the growth reflects confidence in its leadership and expanding organisational strength.

According to UDA’s statement shared on X on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, some of the regions with the most significant improvements since the 2022 election include the Coast and Western Kenya, showing growing trust and renewed energy among supporters.

“Rift Valley and Mt. Kenya Regions continue to lead with the highest number of fully paid-up aspirants, a clear sign of strong grassroots confidence and organisational strength,” the party said.

UDA said the Coastal Region and Western Kenya are among the regions with many aspirants compared to 2022.
