Ngunjiri calls for Kindiki-Gachagua unity after impeachment ruling

By , June 9, 2026

Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has urged former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his successor Kithure Kindiki to put aside their differences and work together for the benefit of the Mt Kenya region following the court’s decision to uphold the latter’s impeachment case.

In a statement shared on his social media pages on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the outspoken former legislator, who has in the past been a vocal critic of the Democracy for Citizens (DCP) leader, argued that the political reality now facing the region requires both leaders to find common ground rather than continue pursuing divergent political paths.

“Now that the impeachment will clearly not be overturned this term, the former & current DPs should now sit & figure out how to work jointly to ensure the Mt Kenya region gets what was promised to it during this term, even as the rest of the country also grows.”

According to Wambugu, with Gachagua’s impeachment now appearing unlikely to be overturned during the current term, attention should shift from supremacy battles and legal battles to ensuring that the people of Mt Kenya receive the development and benefits that were promised to them under the Kenya Kwanza administration.

His urge to the duo

He maintained that both the former and current deputy presidents occupy influential positions within the region and should therefore explore ways of working in unison to advance the interests of Mt Kenya.

According to Wambugu, such cooperation would help ensure that the region secures its fair share of government projects and development initiatives while also contributing to the growth and prosperity of the rest of the country.

Ruling on Kindiki’s appointment

This decision follows the ruling of a three-judge bench, which not only upheld Rigathi Gachagua’s removal from the office of Deputy President but also affirmed that the appointment of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as his successor was lawful and procedurally sound.

In his ruling, Justice Erick Ogolla, who led the bench, stated that the approval of a Deputy President nominee does not require public participation.

“The approval of a Deputy President nominee for appointment as the substantive Deputy President does not require public participation. In undertaking such approval, Parliament exercises delegated sovereign authority on behalf of the people, as provided for under the Constitution,” the court stated.
