Newton Karish refutes claims he has dropped 2027 Mbeere North MP bid for Leo Wamuthunde
By David Nthua, July 28, 2026Former Mbeere North parliamentary candidate Newton Karish has dismissed a viral statement claiming he has abandoned his 2027 bid and endorsed area MP Leo Wa Muthende.
Karish flagged the statement as fake after it circulated widely on social media on Monday, July 28, 2026.
The fabricated statement claimed Karish had decided not to vie for any elective seat in Embu County or Mbeere North and would instead support Wa Muthende in the next General Election.
In response, Karish accused his political rivals of spreading misinformation.
“It is true I have been listening to the people of Mbeere North and Embu at large,” he wrote on Facebook.
“Among the things we have agreed, supporting thieves who stole our victory is not included. Ignore the fake news from that desperate team.”
Karish maintains focus on 2027
Karish has remained politically active since challenging Wa Muthende’s victory in the 2025 Mbeere North by-election through the courts.
Two days before dismissing the fake statement, he celebrated the conclusion of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s voter registration exercise.
According to Karish, Mbeere North added 6,320 new voters during the registration drive.
“In the just concluded IEBC voter registration in Mbeere North, we have added a whopping 6,320 new voters,” he posted.
“My good people, what would you propose to be our next assignment? You are my bosses. Nitatii.”
The post was widely interpreted by his supporters as a sign that he remains firmly focused on another parliamentary bid in 2027.
Fake endorsement targets 2027 race
The fake statement claimed Karish had decided to support Wa Muthende for the Mbeere North parliamentary seat.
It further stated that he would not contest any elective position in Embu County in 2027.
Karish rejected the claims, describing them as propaganda from a “desperate team.”
The exchange highlights the growing political contest in Mbeere North as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Wa Muthende retained the Mbeere North seat following the 2025 by-election, while Karish remained one of the constituency’s leading opposition figures after challenging the outcome in court.
