Nairobi turns into a river when it rains: Ngara MCA fingers Sakaja

By , September 4, 2025

Ngara Member of County Assembly Chege Mwaura has attacked the administration of Nairobi City County for poor drainage and increased insecurity cases in the Central Business District (CBD).

Speaking on a local radio station on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Chege Mwaura wondered how the country’s capital city has failed to fix the drainage system in town, paralysing transport and business whenever it rains. The MCA also blamed Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration for the increased mugging cases in Nairobi CBD.

Mwaura’s sentiments come at a time when Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, on Sunday, August 31, 2025, escaped an impeachment motion against him, thanks to the timely intervention by President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

”Why are we allowing goons to run the city? We have security apparatus; why not agree on a formula? And why is it that every time it rains, the city turns into a river? Why can’t we fix the drainage?” Mwaura posed.

Chege Mwaura added: ”Nairobians were not satisfied and are still not satisfied. They feel let down by the governor, and also by us (MCAs) for not being able to push him (Sakaja), to provide enough oversight and to hold him accountable to deliver.”

Ruto, Raila rescue Sakaja

Mwaura also revealed that President William Ruto requested more time to look into the impeachment possibilities of Nairobi Governor Johson Sakaja. The County Assemblies Forum General Secretary added that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) allied Members of County Assembly in Nairobi met the Head of State and ODM Leader Raila Odinga on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at State House, Nairobi, to deliberate on Governor Sakaja’s ouster. Following the meeting, the Nairobi MCAs were asked to shelve Sakaja’s impeachment ambitions for at least 60 days.

”We met the President and former Prime Minister, and their concern was: yes, there’s a problem, but is impeachment really the solution? What options do we have after that? The President suggested that since this is uncharted territory, we give him a reasonable 60 days to address the issues. If nothing changes, then he’ll wash his hands of it.” He said.

Both ODM and UDA MCAs had collected over 70 signatures out of 123 in the House, with a bid to present an impeachment motion at the Nairobi County Assembly. They required at least 82 signatures to table an official motion of impeachment.
