Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection Alfred Mutua has taken a swipe at Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, accusing him of diminishing his political stature by aligning with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking during a public event on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Mutua questioned Kalonzo’s judgment, suggesting the veteran politician was ‘playing small’ by following leaders he described as unpopular and ineffective.

“Kalonzo is big. He should not be following Gachagua. He is playing small politics, and that is not good for the Kamba nation,” Mutua said.

Mutua, who once served as Kalonzo’s ally before charting his political path, did not mince words. He challenged Kalonzo’s long tenure in politics and public service, questioning the tangible results delivered to the Ukambani region over the decades.

“For 45 years Kalonzo has been in politics and government. Where are the roads in Ukambani? Where are the tarmacked roads? There is nothing!” Mutua stated.

The CS continued to criticise Kalonzo’s current political affiliations, particularly his closeness to Gachagua, who has become increasingly vocal in opposition to President William Ruto’s administration.

Gachagua ouster

According to Mutua, the former DP’s impeachment by Parliament was deliberate and politically motivated.

“We impeached Gachagua because we didn’t want him. He does not represent our vision for this country,” Mutua declared.

Mutua did not elaborate on whether he was referring to a formal parliamentary process or political manoeuvring behind the scenes.

Mutua’s remarks come at a time of increased tension and realignment within Kenya’s political landscape, as leaders begin to prepare for the 2027 General Election. Kalonzo, who has positioned himself as a key opposition figure, has recently been seen attending forums with Gachagua and other leaders critical of the Kenya Kwanza administration.

But Mutua insists that Kalonzo is misreading the political climate.

“Our people are tired of empty promises. They want water, roads, and jobs—not leaders who are always waiting for endorsement or playing second fiddle,” he said.

He urged the Kamba community to reject what he termed “recycled leadership” and rally behind leaders with a record of development and vision.

He drummed up support for the broad-based government as a key move to address long-standing problems such as water supply, electricity, and the creation of jobs for the people.

“President Ruto is intentional towards alleviating the economic status of our people. I will support any initiative that is aimed at empowering our people,” he asserted.
