Muthama warns Gachagua against 2007/08 PEV rhetoric

Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama has warned the leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Rigathi Gachagua against evoking memories of the 2007/08 post-election violence, saying that such sentiments could plunge the country into chaos.

Speaking on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, during the burial of Peter Lumumba Mutiso in Ngamba Salama, Makueni County, Muthama said any attempt to remind Kenyans of the events that occurred nearly two decades ago is dangerous, especially at a time when most citizens have healed.

Muthama, who is currently serving as a commissioner at the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), says that if he continues to incite the public, he may be compelled to reveal Gachagua’s past deeds during his tenure as a District Officer.

“We should forget about what happened in the past and move forward. If we choose to dwell on the past and claim we have not forgotten, Gachagua, you were the District Officer there. Don’t think people like Muthama don’t know what you did. If he continues on this path, we have enough evidence of his actions at the time,” Muthama said.

“I have nothing personal against him. He was my deputy president, and I was a witness to the entire process that led to his selection as UDA’s running mate. But there’s one thing I will not let pass. I am a true Kenyan who fears nothing. I will stand for the truth—and the truth is, Gachagua, stop this divisive politics. Gachagua, never ever remind us about 2007 incident.”

Gachagua’s sentiments

On Monday, Gachagua stated that his remarks were meant to urge the electoral body to ensure a credible 2027 election. He insisted that his statement was based on historical facts and the controversial elections of 1992, 1997, and 2007.

“My statement regarding post-election violence was a precautionary one, not incitement. It is grounded in historical facts and past electoral experiences. We must have a free and fair election in 2027,” he said.

Muthama also addressed political camps considering approaching him for 2027 support, affirming that he joined President William Ruto to pursue unity, justice, and fairness—principles he holds dear.

He further emphasized the importance of allowing democracy to flourish, condemning the chaos witnessed last week during the unveiling of Gachagua’s new political outfit.

“Our country must nurture a mature democracy. Even if I, my wife, my children, or anyone else wants to form a political party, the Constitution permits it and must be respected. I did not appreciate the events surrounding the launch of Gachagua’s party. Let Gachagua have his own party. He will compete with others in the political arena. Therefore, let’s respect his constitutional right to form a political party,” Muthama said.

Muthama also criticized the current state of the opposition, suggesting that in the absence of ODM leader Raila Odinga, it has become ineffective.

“If there’s anyone who understands opposition politics in this country, it’s Raila Amolo Odinga. We worked together to challenge Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime, driven by a desire for real change. But this current opposition gives Kenyans no hope. We must be careful with our words and avoid reckless statements. If you want to understand the devastation of violence, ask the Congolese. Let Gachagua criticize Ruto as much as he wants, but if he desires national leadership, he cannot keep referring to ‘my people’,” he said.
