Muhoozi: Museveni has final approval on reopening NTV Uganda, Daily Monitor
By David Nthua, June 29, 2026Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has indicated that President Yoweri Museveni will make the final decision on the reopening of NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor.
This comes hours after journalist Andrew Mwenda said discussions were underway to restore the two Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda outlets.
In a post on X on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Muhoozi said consultations were ongoing with allies outside Uganda before a final decision is presented to President Museveni.
Reopening NTV Uganda

“As comrade @AndrewMwenda said, we are having discussions with our allies in the UK and Europe about reopening both NTV and Daily Monitor.
“We shall take the results of these discussions to Mzee for final approval,” Muhoozi wrote.
The remarks came shortly after veteran Ugandan journalist Andrew Mwenda announced that he had held discussions with Muhoozi regarding the closure of the two media houses.
“I have just held discussions with Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba @mkainerugaba and we, as leaders of PLU, have agreed that we shall reopen both Daily Monitor and NTV soon.
“However, we shall first have discussions with the management of both sister companies. I will inform them when we can have this meeting,” Mwenda posted on X.
The latest developments follow a day of uncertainty after Muhoozi announced the shutdown of NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor, prompting military action at Nation Media Group Uganda’s premises.

NMG Uganda confirms military raid
In a statement issued on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Nation Media Group Uganda said its offices in Namuwongo, Kampala, and at the Kampala Serena International Conference Centre had become inaccessible following what it described as an overnight military raid.
According to the company, the operation, which it said occurred at about 1:00 am, resulted in electricity being disconnected and disrupted normal operations across its television, radio, and newspaper platforms.
“While our offices are closed, we will continue to keep you engaged and informed through our digital platforms,” the media house said.

Nation Media Group Uganda also thanked its audiences for their continued support and said it would provide further updates as the situation develops.
The statement came after NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor reported disruptions to their broadcasts and operations following Muhoozi’s earlier public directives.
Museveni’s approval now in focus
Muhoozi’s latest statement suggests that although discussions on reopening the outlets are ongoing, the final decision will rest with President Museveni, whom he referred to as “Mzee”.
By the time of publication, neither the Ugandan government nor Nation Media Group Uganda had announced when the two media outlets would resume normal broadcasting and publishing operations.
