Moses Kuria supports Mudavadi’s proposal to hold referendum alongside 2027 elections
Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) party leader Moses Kuria has backed the proposal by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi to hold a constitutional referendum alongside the 2027 general election.
Kuria made the remarks in a statement posted on his X account on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, asserting that the initiative would be useful in addressing the realities faced by Kenyans on key issues of governance and inclusivity.
“I fully support the call by Musalia Mudavadi to have a referendum as the 7th ballot during the 2027 General Elections,” part of his statement read.
According to the politician, the referendum would give citizens the opportunity to decide on issues that have long plagued the nation and to address gaps that the 2010 Constitution does not cover.
“I have always said that we need to face reality as a country. Whilst our constitution is arguably among the most progressive in the world, there are several areas that need to be fixed based on the realities of Kenyan society and with 15 years of experience with Katiba 2010. The lie we live has manifested itself in quick fixes such as handshakes, NADCO, and now broad-based arrangements. This is akin to taking Piriton instead of surgery.”
He further supported his assertions by claiming that he and the late Raila Odinga had previously agreed to jointly advocate for the same constitutional changes.
“Baba Raila Odinga and I had agreed to jointly champion that (I know everyone says Baba told them this and that). I have been advocating for this since 2016. It’s time for our cheap makeup to fall off,” he added.

His remarks come after Mudavadiproposed the idea of the referendum alongside the elections, stating that the vote should redress key constitutional issues that have bedevilled the country for a long time.
“But we have an opportunity to correct some things, in my view, and this perhaps is the better time where we can introduce some referendum issues to this election,” Mudavadi said.
Mudavadi stated that holding the referendum alongside the 2027 general election would help save on costs that would otherwise be incurred if it were conducted separately.
Among the issues he said could be put in the referendum include implementing the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO), which he said was one of the dreams of the late Raila Odinga, and entrenching the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) kitty into the constitution.
