‘Hio kazi ilitushinda’- Moses Kuria reveals uphill task for 4 ODM men nominated to Cabinet

By , July 27, 2024

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has mentioned some of the daunting tasks awaiting the Cabinet nominees nominated from the Opposition Party, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Speaking on Friday, July 26, 2024, the former CS pointed out that four Cabinet Secretaries nominees from ODM will have to accomplish what their predecessors failed to achieve.

Joho’s task

Former Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has been nominated by President William Ruto to serve in the Ministry of Mining and Blue Economy.

If approved, Joho will have the arduous task of drafting the revenue-sharing formula for minerals, Moses Kuria has revealed.

Kuria told Makueni residents that during his tenure as CS, he failed to find a lasting solution to address the issue of sharing revenue of minerals.

He however challenged the governors to direct their questions to Joho who he believes will sought them out.

“Jana tuliona ata watu wameingia kwa serikali na muhimu. Lakini niseme kitu kimoja, sisi kama serikali kuna mambo sana ambayo tumeweza na kuna mengine ambayo hatukuweza. Kwa mfano, hapa katika County ya Makueni tukona mambo ya madini na uyu governor amekuja kwangu amenisumbua mara mingi akaniambia Makueni itapata share yake ya copper lini? Mimi sikuwa na jawabu, hio kazi ilitushinda. Sasa wewe governor utafute Joho atakuambia hio maneno (Yesterday we saw some people have joined the government which is important. But let me candid, there are things we managed to do as a government but we failed to accomplish others. For instance, the Makueni Governor has been on my case regarding the sharing revenue from the copper mining proceeds. I did not have an answer because I failed in that sector. Now, the Governor can look for Joho and tell him the issue),” Moses Kuria remarked amidst laughter.

Kuria’s message to Oparanya

President Ruto designated Oparanya as Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs in a broad-based government.

According to Kuria, the outgoing CS failed to convince Kenyans to repay the Hustler Fund loan. However, the President has tapped in Oparanya’s expertise to help his administration recoup the money.

“Watu millioni kumi na mbili wamekopa pesa ya Hustler Fund wametoroka nayo, tumejaribu kuwafuata imetushinda, tukaambia Oparanya inaonekana hio kazi unaweza, kuja utafute hio pesa (12 million people have borrowed from the Hustler Fund and have defaulted, we have tried to find them but we have failed. Then we said Oparanya looks like someone who can properly execute the role, then come and look for that money) Kuria further stated.

Besides Hustler Fund, Kuria noted that Oparanya will also be tasked with reviving various co-operatives across the country.

Opiyo Wandayi’s task

President Ruto nominated Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi as the new cabinet secretary for Energy. If approved, the former CS indicated that Wandayi will be expected to institute reforms and policies that will lower the prices of fuel and other forms of energy including electricity.

Kuria recalled how he was bashed for advising Kenyans to drill wells and find fuel when the prices of the product had hit a level-high.

However, Kuria noted that it is now Wandayi’s task to ensure Kenyans get affordable fuel.

If approved he will become the new CS to succeed Davis Chirchir who has been nominated to take up that of Roads previously held by Kipchumba Murkomen.

John Mbadi

Nominated MP John Mbadi was nominated as Cabinet Secretary for Treasury and National Planning. According to Kuria, the previous CS failed to find better ways of raising billions required to sustain various sectors of the economy including education, healthcare and affordable housing.

He however noted that all eyes will be on Mbadi to see how he will perform in the Ministry. If approved, Mbadi will succeed Njuguna Ndung’u.
