Moses Kuria apologises on behalf of Mt Kenya over attacks on Raila and Jaramogi
By Mustafa Juma, December 31, 2025Former President William Ruto’s Senior Economic Advisor, Moses Kuria, has issued an apology on behalf of the Mt Kenya region to the Nyanza region, acknowledging decades of political attacks and divisive narratives targeting the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and his son, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, in what appears to be his end-of-year message, the Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) party leader reflected on the political history that saw the Odinga family portrayed as adversaries in regional political campaigns.
“For 60 years, Kikuyus were sold the devil’s portrait in the name of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Raila Odinga. This worked magic as a tool of political mobilisation. After all, the church can survive without angels but not without a devil to fight. It was wrong,” Kuria stated.

End to past political rivalries
He stressed that the apology is offered in good faith, emphasising that past political rivalries should not continue to divide communities.
“On behalf of the Kikuyu community and Mt Kenya people at large, I offer my unqualified and profuse apology to the Luo Nation. At the same time, two wrongs do not make a right. Neither Uhuru Kenyatta nor the Kikuyus are an enemy of the Luo Nation. Do not allow us to be turned into a tool of political mobilisation. We can’t sustain a devil narrative for another 60 years,” Kuria wrote on X.

Kuria’s remarks come at a time when the country is preparing for the 2027 general elections, a period often marked by political tension and ethnic fault lines.
Raila’s Mt Kenya support
While still alive and active in Kenyan politics, the late Raila attempted five stabs at the presidency, but all were unsuccessful.
Despite having running mates from the Mt Kenya region in some of the general elections he contested, Raila barely got support from the region.
During the 2022 general elections, the late former prime minister had a running mate from Mt Kenya and was backed by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta but still got little support from the region, over what some argued was the myth that had been sold to them by their forefathers.
Will Kuria’s apology break the myth?
