Political activist Morara Kebaso has accused government-aligned forces of orchestrating an online smear campaign against him, claiming that thousands of young bloggers were paid to destroy his image and discredit his work.

In a statement posted on his X account on Friday, November 28, 2025, Kebaso condemned what he described as a coordinated effort to portray him as a fraudster.

According to Kebaso, this started when his online civic-education series Vampire Diaries began exposing suspected misappropriation of public funds. He claimed the smear campaign focused heavily on his fundraising for fuel, which he viewed as a new model of citizen participation.

“When the government saw the impact of the Vampire Diaries in exposing theft of public money, they hired thousands of my fellow youth as bloggers to destroy my reputation. My weakest point of attack was the fundraising for fuel,” he stated.

Adding;

“I was trolled to depression. A man who had worked hard all his life for his property was painted a conman, a beggar and a swindler. I had to leave my family WhatsApp group. I stopped going to church because I felt the world saw me as a fraud.”

Kebaso said what hurt him most was the sense of betrayal. He had hoped supporters and well-wishers who had backed his aspirations for a people-powered change would stand by him. Instead, many believed the accusations.

“And the most heartbreaking thing is that you believed them. I expected you to defend me so that you form a protective curtain as I continue with the work. But you did not. You agreed with them.”

Building trust

In response, he said he took concrete steps to restore his name. He refunded those who requested reimbursements and urged transparency, insisting that all contributions had been used for civic work and not for personal gain.

“Some of you say hata William Ruto hutusiwa kila siku na kuitwa mwizi. Well, in his case, it’s true, so why should he care? If I make 3 billion daily from theft, would I be offended to be called a thief? It only pains when it is false.”

He added that his heart had always belonged to the cause over profit.

“I have a heart that cares not a heart of stone like the politicians you vote for … but with time, soft hearts harden and those who care stop caring. That is how promising transformational leaders become violent and corrupt.”

Over the past year, Kebaso has repeatedly raised alarm about a toxic online culture that quickly vilifies young activists while giving establishment politicians a pass.

In July 2025, he publicly lamented being unfairly labelled a conman by people who once supported his initiatives.

He described being unable to rest, eat, or sleep because of the constant trolling. Kebaso admitted the emotional toll had crushed his morale and forced him to step back from politics. He said the attacks dragged his reputation and integrity through the sewer line.
