Martha Karua: This is what I would have said in 90 seconds during Raila’s burial
By Kiprono Keileb, October 21, 2025The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has revealed what she would have said if she had been given time to speak during the late Raila Odinga’s burial in Bondo, saying her message would have been brief but powerful.
Speaking during a political talk show hosted by a local television station on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Karua said she needed only 90 seconds to express her thoughts on democracy, constitutional order, and the ideals that Raila stood for.
“I would have said that we fought for multi-party democracy, which is entrenched in the constitution, and therefore I will remain in opposition, and opposition will remain because the constitution sanctions it, and therefore the move to bring all the parties under one roof is unconstitutional,” Karua stated.

She emphasised that the greatest way to honour the late Raila Odinga was not through long speeches or political pledges, but by living up to his lifelong fight for justice and democracy.
“I would have also said the greatest honour we can give Raila is to follow his ideal and uphold multi-partisanship and uphold the rights of the people, and therefore the regime must stop violating the rights of the people, abductions, torture and others,” she said.
Karua, who was Raila Odinga’s presidential running mate in 2022 and worked closely with Raila during the fight for multi-party democracy, noted that the former Prime Minister sacrificed much for Kenya’s political freedom and deserved to be honoured through action, not words.

She maintained that her stance on opposition politics remains firm, insisting that Raila’s spirit of resistance and defence of democracy should continue beyond his lifetime.
“I did not need more than 90 seconds to talk,” Karua added, underlining that the truth she wanted to speak about did not require a long speech.
Her remarks come days after Raila’s emotional send-off in Bondo, where leaders from across the political divide gathered to celebrate his life and legacy.
Karua’s statement adds to the growing conversation about Raila’s ideals and the future of opposition politics in Kenya, reminding leaders to stay true to the democratic values he fought for.
