Martha Karua set to join Azimio amid push for her to be named Raila’s running mate

After weeks of meditation, Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua has decided to join Raila Odinga-led Azimio la Umoja ahead of the August election.

According to reports, Karua is set to be received by the ODM party leader today, March 23, at Serena Hotel in Nairobi.

Martha’s move to join Raila’s side comes a day after she revealed that One Kenya Alliance (OKA), an alliance she was previously part of, is dead after other principals – Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Cyrus Jirongo (UDA) and Gideon Moi (Kanu) – signed a coalition deal with Azimio la Umoja.

Following the OKA split, Martha revealed that she was ready to join any political formation that she believes will cater for the needs of Kenyans.

“I am not ready to say outrightly or upfront which side, but I will say this; I’m looking for a formation where we can see a good number of people of goodwill; people who have in the past demonstrated selfless service to the nation,” Martha said in an interview with Citizen TV.

Her move to join the Azimio la Umoja camp also comes amid a push by various Mt Kenya leaders to have her as Raila’s running mate in the coming polls. She had once said that she was open to the idea but the decision to be a running mate will lie on the former Prime Minister.

“I take the endorsement kindly with appreciation and I know they have goodwill towards me and they have confidence in me. I hear them but again, DP position is not something you run for, it is a position someone else names you for,” she said in the interview.
