Martha Karua: Raila entrusted almost everything to Junet
By Kenneth Mwenda, January 8, 2026Former Azimio la Umoja presidential running mate Martha Karua has spoken publicly about the handling of party agents during the 2022 elections, saying that the late Raila Odinga entrusted almost everything to Suna East Member of Parliament (MP) Junet Mohamed.
Her comments came during a morning TV interview on Thursday, January 8, 2026.
Karua responded to recent claims by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who accused Junet of mishandling campaign funds and failing to manage party agents effectively. Sifuna made the claims on January 3 at a funeral in Murang’a County, where he said Junet mismanaged funds received from the Fourth President Uhuru Kenyatta for the Azimio campaign.
During the interview, Karua recalled how she reacted to Sifuna’s public remarks. “I said, say it louder! Yeah, we all want to hear. Spill the beans,” she said.
She emphasised that while she was not directly involved in every decision, she knew Junet had been entrusted with key responsibilities.
“All I know is that Baba entrusted literally almost everything to Junet,” Karua said. She added that anyone with further information should come forward and share what they know.

Karua reflects on 2022
Karua also reflected on her own involvement during the 2022 elections. She said she was heavily deployed across the campaign and could not oversee every detail personally.
“I came in two and a half months before the elections. I was completely overstretched. I was required to do everything on the mountain and still show up in other places. It wasn’t possible to sit and do the planning,” she said.
The former deputy-presidential candidate stressed that while internal failures may have occurred, she had no way of knowing the full extent. She said she received calls from candidates across the country expressing anger over missing or changed agent lists.
“For agents, a candidate is key. We tried to get the candidates reinstated,” she said.
Karua’s comments come amid an escalating rift within ODM. Sifuna’s accusations follow a public debate over how funds and agent lists were handled during Raila Odinga’s last campaign. He claimed Junet hadfailed to pay agents properly and mismanaged campaign resources.

Karua said she shares the public’s interest in understanding what went wrong and urged anyone with knowledge to speak up.
“Say it louder; we would like to hear. Anybody with information, let them spill it,” she said.
