Maraga slams NPS, DCI and IPOA for betraying Kenyan trust

David Maraga has launched a scathing attack on Kenya’s key law enforcement bodies, accusing the National Police Service (NPS), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) of losing the trust of the Kenyan people.
In a bold press statement released on Monday, June 16, 2027, Maraga claims these institutions have lied under oath, particularly in relation to the brutal murder of Albert Omondi Ojwang’.
“The three institutions charged with the maintenance of law and order, the NPS, DCI and IPOA have lied under oath. Consequently, they have lost the trust of the Kenyan people,” he said.
Maraga, a former Chief Justice and now a presidential hopeful, states that the leadership of these bodies, including Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, has been complicit in a cover-up.
“The patently contradictory statements issued over the past few days were meant to cover up the gruesome murder in the hands of those charged with maintaining law and order,” he stated.
Ruto held accountable
This accusation follows growing public outrage over Ojwang’s death, with many Kenyans demanding accountability. The leader further criticised President William Ruto, suggesting his response to the incident was “callous and calculated to avoid taking responsibility.”

Maraga emphasised that the buck stops with the president, especially amid reports of widespread kidnappings and killings under his watch.
“The backs of Kenyans are broken, but they are rising,” he added, urging citizens to exercise their constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and protest.
Maraga’s statement outlines a three-point action plan, starting with the immediate arrest and prosecution of Mr. Lagat, whom he accuses of direct or indirect involvement in Ojwang’s illegal arrest, torture, and murder.
“Integrity demands that we must end impunity as guided by law and our moral standing,” he declared.
He also pledged to support private prosecutions if no action is taken by June 25, 2025.
“Our institutions of human rights and justice are in serious need of resetting and rebuilding,” he noted, highlighting the need to restore public faith.
Maraga encouraged citizens to demand the resignation or removal of the Inspector General, Deputy Inspector General, and DCI Director.
