Maraga sets conditions for working with Matiang’i ahead of 2027

The former Chief Justice, David Maraga, has set conditions for teaming up with the former Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, ahead of 2027.

While speaking during an interview on the Obinna Show on Monday, November 25, 2025, Maraga, who is eyeing the presidential seat, defended his move as one driven by the young people who took to the streets during the Gen Z–led protests advocating for the scrapping of the Finance Bill 2024.

He stated that if his Gusii brother Fred Matiang’i wants to work with him, he must first meet the irreducible minimums before he agrees to work with him.

Maraga continued to explain that Matiang’i must begin by embodying his vision for the country, which includes upholding the rule of law and fighting corruption.

He added that if Matiang’i is willing to support such values, he will always sit down and work with him as they head toward 2027.

“If he comes and embraces my vision, we will work together,” he said.

He went on to state that he cannot cede ground to anyone and that anybody who wants to work with him must accept him as the flag bearer, with others rallying behind him.

On the possibility of working with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Maraga praised the former vice president, saying that he is a good man and revealed that they were classmates during their college days at the University of Nairobi while studying law.

He said he is open to working with Kalonzo since they are long-time friends and sees no issue partnering with him.

However, he insisted that, just like Matiang’i, Kalonzo must first embrace the vision he has for the country and agree to abide by it before they can work together. He added that this condition applies to other people interested in vying for the presidency alongside him.

Possibility of working with Ruto

He firmly rejected any possibility of working with President William Ruto, saying that their values do not align. He strongly dismissed the idea of them sitting down to form a political coalition, comparing their values to day and night.

He stated that he cannot work with someone who orders people to be shot in the leg, insisting that their paths can never align.
