Mandera East MP Weytan: Raila-Ruto pact hinged on national unity
By Luke Oluoch, August 24, 2025Mandera East Member of Parliament Mohammed Hussein Weytan has asserted that Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Leader Raila Odinga’s decision to close ranks with President William Ruto was premised on the deal to bring Kenyans together.
Speaking in Tarbaj, Wajir County, during an empowerment forum on Sunday, August 24, 2025, the ODM lawmaker affirmed his support of the deal between the two principals.
Unity
“Raila is a statesman; he has accepted to join Ruto because he wanted people to be united. Do you know he joined? He saw Ruto’s efforts to bring people together. I am from ODM, and I have also approved the decision,” he stated.
He castigated the critics of the broad-based government, calling out the opposition for their divisive rhetoric and selfish gains.
According to the northeastern MP, the opposition is simply opposed to the president’s bringing all spheres of the country to level terms in terms of development.

“What we are saying is this: to the opposition, your problem is tribalism because the president has decided to unite the whole country. They are not comfortable with it; he has brought 47 and 290 constituencies and 42 tribes together,” he stated.
The legislator exuded optimism of Ruto’s reelection, stressing that the incumbent will get his second term and sworn in broad daylight
His remarks come after Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi also praised Deputy President Kithure Kindiki at the same function.
Praises for Kindiki
“I have worked with the former deputy, and I am now working with you. The difference is as clear as daylight is from the darkness of night. You are educated, professional, and a person who respects people. Your yes is a yes, and your no is a reasoned no. There are no insults and no threats,” Abdullahi stated.
In a veiled reference, Abdullahi took a swipe at former DP Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of profiling the people from the region.
“We have a choice between a group that does not believe that we are integral to Kenya, that we are Kenyans, that our land is part of Kenya, a group that sees us as al-Shabaab, a group that profiles us—and a group that believes that Kenyan Somalis are Kenyans, contributors to this country, and have rights just like every other Kenyan,” he remarked.
