Macharia Munene: Gachagua impeachment was ill-advised

Political analyst Macharia has termed the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as ill-advised.

While speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Thursday, April 10, 2025, he stated that at the point of impeachment, many thought Gachagua’s political career could sink and be buried.

He added that the Democracy for Citizens (DCP) leader refused to fade and has instead become a bigger problem than he could have been had he been left to continue serving in his capacity as the second in command.

“So it was a mistake, okay, on the part of the president and his team for impeaching Gachagua. I think he was ill-advised,” he said.

Macharia Munene pointed out that his argument emanates from the recent political fireworks in Ol Kalou, where Gachagua went heavy on his former boss, even telling him that he impeached him, thinking that he had finished him, but he did not manage to remove him from the hearts of the Mt Kenya people—something that earned him a standing ovation from the crowd.

“It was thought that impeaching the deputy president and removing him from office would make him politically dead. It turned out that he refused to die, and instead, it became a bigger problem than when he was inside.”

Consequences of Gachagua’s impeachment

Macharia continued to state that it would have been safer to contain Gachagua in government than to leave him roaming freely outside it, since, according to Munene, there is a lot that the DCP leader knows and can’t give Ruto peace.

Added to this is what he described as his sharp tongue, which cannot spare anything and will call out everything tainting the image of the current administration.

Macharia Munene further stated that the consequences of impeaching Gachagua are now being felt, especially in the Mt Kenya region during the funeral of the Ol Kalou MP, David Kiaraho, where, according to him, there is a growing feeling that things are not going right in the country, with most of the blame being directed at the president.

Gachagua’s impeachment

The analyst continued to state that the impeachment gave Gachagua huge mileage, sending signals from his backyard that even if the president and the government do not like him, the Mt Kenya community still supports him. That is why, according to the analyst, the influence of the former Mathira MP has been rising significantly.

He added that Gachagua must continue working hard to gain the universal acceptance he has been craving, noting that his influence is increasing day by day—something that, according to the political science lecturer, is not sitting well with the president.
