Kuria blasts Gachagua over Mt Kenya funding accusations
By William Muthama, July 19, 2025Former Senior Advisor in President William Ruto’s administration, Moses Kuria, has strongly dismissed remarks made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of bankrolling former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga to destabilise Mt Kenya politics.
Responding via his X account on Saturday, July 19, 2025, Kuria hit out at Gachagua’s claims, stating that the former Deputy President is known for political deceit and divisive strategies.
“Rigathi Gachagua has accused me during his US tour of funding and supporting Maina Njenga. I am guilty as charged,” Kuria wrote, laced with sarcasm.

Kuria further criticised Gachagua for projecting himself as a moral authority despite, in his view, having a history of underhanded political manoeuvres.
“I learnt from the best .I was in the room when Rigathi paid the same people money to steal Uhuru Kenyatta’s goats from Northlands,” Kuria said, suggesting that his time in government gave him insight into Gachagua’s tactics.
Political chess game
The public fallout follows Gachagua’s remarks during a US tour where he warned Mt Kenya residents to remain alert, claiming Kuria’s recent moves mirror State House strategies aimed at splitting the mountain vote.
“When you see Moses Kuria praising certain ideas or directions, understand that it is aligned with what the President wants,” Gachagua warned.
He alleged a calculated plan to divide the region politically, with some local leaders “being used” to dismantle the bloc’s traditional voting unity.

Kuria, who resigned as Senior Economic Advisor to President Ruto on July 8, fired back by suggesting Gachagua’s accusations were hypocritical.
He alluded to a previous private meeting where the former DP allegedly revealed controversial plans now being weaponized against others.
Rift widens further
This exchange comes amid heightened political speculation in Mt Kenya as leaders position themselves for 2027.
Kuria’s resignation from government, after serving in various roles for nearly three years, sparked questions about his future political ambitions and his loyalty to Ruto.
“I thank President Ruto for allowing me to serve… but now it’s time to move forward,” Kuria stated during his exit.
With both Kuria and Gachagua claiming to defend Mt Kenya’s unity while accusing each other of betrayal, the region appears poised for a messy internal showdown as the road to 2027 intensifies.
