Former Ndaragwa MP and Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Jeremiah Kioni has questioned the government’s silence regarding reports of a proposed quarantine facility, arguing that Kenyans learned about the project from the United States government rather than from their own leaders.

Speaking in Gatanga, Murang’a County, on Monday, June 1, 2026, Kioni called for greater transparency from the government, saying Kenyans deserved to be informed and consulted before any plans were made public by foreign authorities.

“On this issue, we should not have learned about it from the Americans. We should have learnt about it from our own government,” Kioni said.

The outspoken politician argued that if there were plans to establish such a facility in the country, the government should have first explained the proposal, its purpose, and the safeguards that would be put in place to protect citizens.

Opposition to visiting Nanyuki

Elsewhere, former Cabinet Secretary for Defence and DAP-K Party leader Eugene Wamalwa has said no public health decision should be taken without citizen participation as opposition leaders intensified criticism of a proposed Ebola quarantine facility linked to Laikipia County.

He made the remarks on Sunday, May 31, 2026, in a post on his X account after attending a church service in Nairobi alongside Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Wamalwa said leaders must prioritise the safety and dignity of Kenyans in all decisions touching on health matters.

“Our people are not children of a lesser God,” he said. “No decision touching on public health should be undertaken without public participation and the full confidence of the citizens.”

Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri also led a section of leaders from Laikipia County in demanding full disclosure from the government over reports that an Ebola quarantine and treatment facility for American citizens could be established at the Nanyuki Air Base.

In a joint statement released to the public on Friday, May 29, 2026, alongside Laikipia County Woman Representative Jane Kagiri, Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere and Laikipia West MP Wachira Karani, the leaders raised concern over what they termed a lack of transparency from the national government regarding the matter.

The lawmakers said that although they recognise the importance of global cooperation in fighting dangerous disease outbreaks, several critical questions remain unanswered concerning the reported plan.
