Kibagendi claims recent events signal tough re-election path for Ruto
By Mabonga Makhanu, May 4, 2026Kitutu Chache South MP Antony Kibagendi has said that recent political developments across the country are a clear indication that President William Ruto could be heading into a Wantam presidency.
In a statement shared on his social media handles on Monday, May 4, 2026, Kibagendi, who is a strong critic of William Ruto’s administration, has argued that events witnessed over the past ten days reflect a growing shift in public sentiment against the current administration.
He pointed to the Linda Mwananchi rally held in Kisumu, saying the large turnout and enthusiasm from residents showed strong political momentum for change. He claimed that despite expectations of hostility, the gathering proceeded successfully and demonstrated widespread dissatisfaction with the government.
“If you still had any doubt that President William Ruto will not be re-elected, that he is indeed a one-term president, then the events of the past 10 days should now give you absolute certainty that this is the direction the country is taking.”

“First, it was the heroic welcome we received in Kisumu last weekend. The Linda Mwananchi Rally was an overwhelming success, despite widespread expectations of chaos and hostility toward our team in that region. The passion, energy, and determination demonstrated by the residents of Kisumu,to see Ruto out of State House, were unmistakable and deeply encouraging.”
Bomet funeral saga
Kibagendi also referred to remarks made by the president during a burial ceremony in Bomet County, where concerns were raised about low voter registration in the Rift Valley.

He said the comments reflected anxiety within the leadership over re-election prospects, adding that public reactions in the region showed growing criticism despite ongoing development projects.
He further highlighted the funeral of the father of James Nyikal in Seme, where a religious leader criticised political leadership for failing to serve the public. Kibagendi said the response from mourners reflected broader frustrations within the country.
Kalasha award
The politician also cited the 4th Kalasha Awards held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, where President Ruto attended as guest of honour. He noted that the reception from the audience was relatively subdued, which he interpreted as a sign of shifting public mood.

According to Kibagendi, these events show that political support cannot be sustained through state influence or elite networks alone. He said ordinary Kenyans are increasingly focused on economic hardship and daily challenges rather than political messaging.
He added that many leaders may be overestimating their popularity on the ground, while citizens are becoming more independent in their political choices.
Looking ahead to the 2027 Kenyan General Election, Kibagendi said the political environment is becoming more competitive and unpredictable, insisting that recent events point to a difficult path for the president’s re-election bid.
