Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa has vowed to return the favour to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka for his unwavering support for former Deputy President Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking at Mbooni Constituency in Makueni County on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, Senator Thang’wa noted that Kalonzo defended Gachagua amidst persecution and an impeachment cloud.

The vocal senator told the residents that Kalonzo Musyoka lobbied Wiper leaders and directed them to vote against the impeachment motion.

To return the favour, Senator Karungo Thang’wa indicated that Mt Kenya would be willing to rally behind him in 2027. The senator insisted that Kalonzo is free to make inroads in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the polls.

He added that the Mt Kenya region is ready to negotiate with him and forge a united front.

“Ndio maana sisi Kalonzo akikuja na vile ametembea kwetu Kiambu, tunawambia karibu… tunatembea wote tukubaliane maneno na tuende safari moja 2027 (That is why we are saying if Kalonzo come, we are ready to welcome him… we will walk together and agree on certain issues so that we can embark on the same journey in 2027),” Thang’wa stated.

“Wakati Ruto aliambia wabunge wake waangushe Ruto na Raila, Wiper ya Kalonzo Musyoka ilisimama na sisi (When Ruto and Raila instructed their MPs to vote in support of Gachagua’s impeachment, Kalonzo stood with us and opposed the motion),” he added.

The same sentiments were shared by Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba who expressed her willingness to back Kalonzo in 2027.

Way forward in 2025

Their sentiments come after Gachagua revealed that he will make a public statement in 2025 detailing the way forward for the Mt Kenya region.

Gachagua disclosed that he had convened several meetings and their input would inform the political announcement which will be made in 2025.

“Come January 2025, I will make a significant public announcement that aligns with the wishes of the Mt. Kenya people. Together, we will reclaim our dignity and overcome this betrayal and humiliation,” he declared.

The former Deputy President’s remarks come amid heightened political tensions following his impeachment, which has exacerbated divisions in the Mt. Kenya region.
