Kiambu Governor Wamatangi receives Ruto ahead of Sunday service in Limuru
Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi on Sunday, August 10, 2025, welcomed President William Ruto at PCEA Joshua Matenjwa Church in Limuru Town for a worship service.
The meeting, which drew national, county, and church leaders, was captured in images shared by the governor on his Facebook page, showing a cordial handshake between the two leaders flanked by clergy and security personnel.
The gathering underscored the growing synergy between political leadership and religious institutions, a relationship Ruto has repeatedly framed as central to addressing Kenya’s social and moral challenges.

Strengthening church–state ties
Just over a week earlier, on July 31, Ruto hosted officials from the Anglican Diocese of Nairobi, led by Bishop Jonathan Kabiru, at State House, Nairobi. He reiterated his commitment to a “whole-of-society approach” to national transformation, aligning with calls from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Chairperson Bishop David Oginde for moral renewal.
Oginde’s prayer during the signing of the Conflict of Interest Bill, 2023, and the Social Protection Bill, 2025, went viral after condemning corruption as a “cancer”, likening it to the biblical account of Ananias and Sapphira. Ruto echoed this sentiment, saying churches are crucial in delivering universal health coverage and quality education.
However, the close partnership between State House and the pulpit has sparked criticism. Advocate Ndegwa Njiru recently faulted the president’s priorities after he donated a Toyota Prado and Ksh20 million to Bishop Benjamin Kalanzo of AIC Machakos for a new sanctuary. Njiru accused Ruto of channelling state resources to “brown envelopes and SUVs for clergy” while millions face hunger, warning that such actions could cost him a second term.
Wamatangi’s development agenda
For Governor Wamatangi, the Limuru meeting also comes at a time of rising political capital. On June 20, 2025, he announced that Thika’s bid for city status had received unanimous backing from Kiambu MCAs, with the report now before the Senate. The upgrade is expected to create over 50,000 jobs through industrial growth, leveraging Thika’s infrastructure and revenue base.
Wamatangi’s vision to transform Thika into a smart city complements Ruto’s broader development blueprint, hinting at a strengthening political alliance.
With over 85 per cent of Kenyans identifying as Christian, according to the 2019 census, church visits by political leaders remain a powerful tool for building public trust. The Limuru engagement served as both a spiritual gathering and a political signal.
