Kericho governor impeachment trial Day 2: Senate gears up for 5-hour session
By Kiprono Keileb, August 28, 2025Kericho Governor Eric Mutai’s impeachment trial entered its second day today, with proceedings resuming amid heightened attention from senators, legal teams, and the public.
The trial, which seeks to determine whether Governor Mutai should be removed from office, is being closely watched as a litmus test for accountability and governance at the county level.
According to the Senate order paper for the day, the session begins with the continuation of evidence presented by the County Assembly. This includes testimonies from witnesses, followed by cross-examination and re-examination.
Senators are then expected to pose questions or seek clarifications before the Governor presents his evidence and witnesses.
The schedule allows for a total of five hours of presentations and examinations, with a maximum of three hours allocated to the Governor for evidence by witnesses and re-examination, while the County Assembly has a maximum of two hours for cross-examination and further re-examination.
The proceedings are expected to conclude with senators’ questions and requests for clarification before an adjournment at around 7:30 pm.

Evidence and examination
Day two marks a critical phase in the impeachment process, as both sides continue to present and challenge evidence.
The County Assembly, which initiated the impeachment motion, is expected to focus on alleged mismanagement, abuse of office, or misconduct by Governor Mutai.
Their witnesses will provide firsthand accounts intended to substantiate the motion, while senators have the authority to probe deeper into inconsistencies or gaps in the testimonies.
Governor Mutai’s defence team will also present witnesses and evidence aimed at refuting the claims.
Cross-examination and re-examination will be key to establishing credibility, and senators’ questions are likely to probe both procedural and substantive issues, ensuring the trial remains thorough and transparent.

Political and public interest
The impeachment trial has captured public attention not only in Kericho but across the country, reflecting a growing interest in accountability among citizens for elected officials.
Analysts note that the outcome of this trial could set a precedent for future impeachment proceedings, particularly on issues of governance, service delivery, and adherence to constitutional mandates at the county level.
Governor Mutai has maintained his stance that he is confident in his defence, while County Assembly members argue that the evidence presented underscores the need for accountability and integrity in office.
As the trial progresses through day two, all eyes remain on the Senate chamber, with a focus on how evidence is weighed, witnesses are scrutinised, and whether procedural fairness is upheld throughout the day’s proceedings.
