Karua reveals United Opposition has reserved new coalition name for 2027 race

People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has hinted that the United Opposition has already reserved a new name for their formation ahead of 2027.

Speaking during a radio interview, the outspoken former justice minister confirmed this, saying that the opposition formation is fully prepared to face President William Ruto in 2027.

“We have already reserved a name for the united opposition,” Karua stated.

The coining of the United Opposition’s name, which recently rebranded to the United Alternative Government, was supposed to take place during a retreat scheduled for February 12 and 13, but it failed to take place. Other agendas during that retreat included coming up with criteria for selecting their presidential flag bearer.

“As a coalition, we are going for a retreat on February 12 and 13 to set our structures, form our committees, agree on the name of our coalition, and settle on the formula for picking our flag bearer,” Wamalwa stated.

This also comes at a time when Wiper leader, who is also the convener of the United Opposition, Kalonzo Musyoka, is urging his fellow principals within the United Opposition to embrace Azimio la Umoja as their political vehicle in 2027.

He argued that with limited time remaining until 2027, there is no need to form a new coalition when they already have an existing one, suggesting perhaps they could rename the coalition from Azimio la Umoja to Komboa Kenya or Ukombozi. According to Kalonzo, the country needs to be liberated from the current regime.

“We are looking at that, and I advise my colleagues that we already have a vehicle; let’s use it, perhaps changing the name. I hear the word ‘Ukombozi’; it’s time to liberate this country,” he said.

Karua differs with Kalonzo

This move by Kalonzo to merge the United Opposition with Azimio la Umoja has been dismissed by his fellow convener, Martha Karua. She stated that her party will not join Azimio la Umoja, questioning why they should use a coalition she considers a ship that has already sunk when the United Opposition is already in place with a name reserved.

This also comes ahead of an upcoming three-day retreat at the coast, where they are expected to sit down and come up with a matrix for selecting their flag bearer who will face William Ruto in 2027.

“We are heading into a retreat after these Niko Kadi tours, which are beginning on Monday, March 30, 2026, across eastern, western, and northern Kenya, to agree on a formula that we’ll use in coming up with a candidate, and also we want to reach out to others so that we move together,” Wamalwa says.
