The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has stated that she might not contest in the 2027 presidential race.

Speaking during the official launch of PLP on Thursday, February 27, 2025, Karua emphasized that liberating the country requires the collective support of all people of goodwill.

Expressing her willingness to stand behind whoever is selected as the candidate, Karua stated that the goal is to find a transparent candidate who will lead the nation to success, no matter who they are.

“You may wonder how we are going to do it, I have expressed my wish to run for president, as my twin brother Kalonzo Musyoka and my son Morara Kebaso and many others,” Karua said.

“Whoever gets selected as a candidate through a transparent method that we will devise, we will all queue behind that person.

She went on to clarify that while she may have previously stated her reluctance to take on a deputy role, this does not mean she will not support another candidate if the circumstances change. She reaffirmed her commitment to the people of Kenya.

“I may have said that I do not want to be a deputy but that doesn’t mean I won’t support another candidate. I do not have to be on that ticket but I will commit 100 per cent if I am not the candidate, to help deliver victory to Kenyans,” she added.

Karua on unseating Ruto

On Monday, February 24, 2025, Karua emphasized the importance of opposition unity to help remove President William Ruto’s administration adding that she is willing to work with Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and Fred Matiang’i, stressing that the ultimate goal is to unseat the current administration.

“There is a real possibility that we can work together. My party’s theme is ‘Unite, Liberate.’ So unity is key to what we are doing. Any progressive leader who wants to bring change, even those who haven’t declared their stance, should know the door is open,” she said.

She asserted that while she remains a contender, all opposition leaders must recognize that Kenya’s interests supersede individual political ambitions.

“Let all candidates present themselves, and I have already presented myself. But we must all remember that Kenya is bigger than any one person. Campaign and seek support, but we must also be prepared to unite behind one flag bearer,” she said.

Karua reiterated that she would be satisfied even if the opposition settled on a different candidate to lead their charge in 2027.

“I must ask myself: is it a must that I push my candidacy at the expense of Kenya’s transformation? It is better that we take collective responsibility in removing this illegitimate regime and usher in a new era, just like we did in 2002,” she said.
