Kanu official wants Gideon to expel Salat from party

A party official has called for the expulsion of Kanu secretary general Nick Salat (pictured) over fresh misconduct claims as a bitter fallout in the former ruling party escalated.

In a letter addressed to Kanu chairman Gideon Moi, Kibet Ngetich, who heads the Bomet Kanu branch, asked the party boss to kick out Salat saying he had joined President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Citing Salat’s remarks during a public meeting attended by the President in Bomet on January 15, the petitioner asked the chairman to invoke his powers and eject him from the party.

“I am writing in reference to Article 5.7 of Kanu constitution and Article 7.1 which gives you veto powers and also spells out matters that require disciplinary measures,” he said.

He said that upon being invited to address the gathering, Salat described himself as a prodigal son who is coming back home.

“He claimed to have been away and had suffered enough. He said that he had suffered too long in Kanu,” the petitioner stated.

The remarks, he said, meant he had already quit Kanu and declared support for UDA, a rival party.

 “It means that he has resigned from Kanu. His sentiments during that function show that he has defected from Kanu and Azimio coalition as a whole,” he explained.

Last month, Moi suspended Salat, his long time ally, and formed a committee to investigate his conduct.
