President William Ruto has announced that the Kenya African National Union (KANU) will work with the ruling Democratic Alliance (UDA) party in the broad-based government ahead of the forthcoming 2027 general election.

Ruto’s confirmation of KANU/Kenya Kwanza collaboration comes after former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi hosted him at the former President Daniel Moi’s Kabarak farm on Friday, October 10, 2025, where the KANU chairman also revealed the reason why he decided to shelve his Baringo County senatorial ambitions in the Thursday, November 27, 2025, by-election.

This comes after TIFA’s latest report showed support for broad-based government had increased.

On Thursday, October 9, 2025, photos of President William Ruto and Gideon Moi at State House, Nairobi, went viral, signalling a reunion between the two leaders since the 2022 general election, where KANU was under the Azimio la Umoja umbrella against Ruto’s UDA in the presidential race.

UDA/KANU unite

Speaking on the newly found working framework between UDA and KANU, President Ruto said there is a need to rise above the politics of division for national development.

”The necessity of national unity demands that all of us to rise above that which divides us so that we work together on the transformation agenda that is urgent in our country. We must, therefore, put aside politics that could cause division and become partners in the national endeavour to get Kenya out of Third World status and make it a prosperous country that works for all citizens,” Ruto said.

”Attended a KANU grassroots meeting, Kabarak, Nakuru County, where the party agreed to work with Kenya Kwanza under the broad-based government. Glad that KANU, under the leadership of Chairman Gideon Moi, will work with us to address the challenges facing our country,” Ruto added in a statement.

Baringo senatorial race

Touching on the reasons why he withdrew from the Baringo County senatorial race, Gideon Moi revealed that his State House meeting with President Ruto on Thursday, October 9, 2025, brought about the decision to shelve his senatorial ambitions after failing to appear at the IEBC nomination offices between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for clearance the same day.

He explained that he had intended to contest for the vacant senatorial seat left behind by William Cheptumo, who died while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital in February 2025, because of unfinished work in Baringo.

”The president (William Ruto) knows why I never made it to the ballot. I had some unfinished business in Baringo, from roads to dams; that’s why I decided to vie. Because President Ruto was elected by Kenyans, I decided to listen to him,” Gideon Moi said.

Gideon Moi further detailed that he had no option but to listen to President William Ruto regarding the senatorial succession politics in the particular devolved unit.
