Kaluma urges inclusivity and equity in governance

Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has called for a renewed focus on inclusivity and equity in Kenya’s governance, stressing the need for leaders and citizens to uphold these values as the country transitions through its current political truce.

In a post on X dated August 31, 2025, Kaluma wrote: “Kenya is a beautiful country. Let’s uphold inclusivity and equity in our governance.”

His remarks come months after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at addressing pressing national concerns.

Push for national unity

The MoU, signed on March 7, 2025, by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, outlined ten key areas of reform, including strengthening devolution, combating corruption, and promoting inclusivity in public life.

Kaluma has consistently voiced support for the agreement, framing it as a milestone in Kenya’s pursuit of national unity and equitable governance.

He noted that the ODM-UDA accord has already led to notable changes, citing the absence of reported abductions or forced disappearances in the two weeks following its signing.

He further highlighted ongoing efforts to restructure the public service to reflect Kenya’s ethnic and regional diversity, describing the reforms as essential for fostering trust and fairness in government.

Kaluma has repeatedly emphasised that the political truce should not be seen merely as a power-sharing arrangement, but as an opportunity to entrench values long championed by Raila Odinga.

In a March statement, he underscored the importance of protecting human rights, democracy, equality, accountability, and the rule of law, saying these principles are fundamental to Kenya’s stability and prosperity.

“Respecting and honouring Baba @RailaOdinga means upholding the national values and principles of governance that he stands for,” Kaluma wrote, framing inclusivity and equity as the cornerstones of good governance.

Accountable leadership

The MP also praised President Ruto’s bold stance against corruption during the recent Devolution Conference in Homa Bay, noting the silence that followed the president’s declaration that no one would be spared in the fight against graft.

Kaluma said the moment underscored a shared national resolve to confront one of Kenya’s most persistent challenges.

Kaluma’s call for inclusivity and equity serves as a reminder of the values needed to anchor Kenya’s democratic journey.
